What is NotebookLM?
Google's NotebookLM is an AI-powered research partner that may help you study, organize your thinking, or come up with new ideas. It functions as a large language model (LLM) (like ChatGPT, Gemini, or DeepSeek) but answers your questions based only off of the source material fed to it. This means that it will not make up, or hallucinate, answers - everything in the answer is cited back to the source information. If you only want it to answer based on certain sources in your list, you simply select or unselect your desired choices.
What else sets NotebookLM apart from other LLMs?
NotebookLM can create study guides, FAQs, and briefs with one click of a button (no need to even type a prompt). It can create a mind map to display the hierarchy of information in the sources. Perhaps most usefully, it can create a custom podcast based on the source material you choose, which you can listen to when it is most convenient for you, such as during your commute. The phone app allows you to take your podcasts on the go and even has an interactive feature where you can interrupt the podcasters and ask a question.
Check out and use my personal notebooks which contain my curated list of sources. You can use the podcasts, study guide, FAQs, etc, on the right hand side or ask it questions like you would with other LLMs.
- Gout notebook (clinical practice guidelines, book chapters, review articles, trials/studies, and package information)
- Osteoarthritis & rheumatoid arthritis (clinical practice guidelines, book chapters, review articles, trials/studies, and package information)
If you have a suggestion for a notebook topic or for sources that I should add to a notebook to better the content for everyone, please let me know at hughes@hughesmedicine.com.
